Wilhelm Röntgen, won the first Nobel Prize in physics "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered by the discovery of the remarkable rays subsequently named after him.” Röntgen is known for his discovery of X-rays, which were briefly named Röntgen radiation. He was the first to take a photographic plate and expose it to X-rays. One of his first images on a photographic plate is of his wife’s hand.
